Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia

2025 Nottoway Pow Wow

The Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia, Inc. held its annual Powwow, September 20-21, 2025, at the Surry County Parks and Recreation Center, in Surry, Virginia . This vibrant cultural event celebrated the rich heritage, traditions, and contributions of the Nottoway people and welcomed visitors from all backgrounds to join in the festivities.

Over the course of the weekend, visitors were treated to a variety of experiences including Grand entry in the dance circle, singing and drumming, and a host of other activities in the history and education areas. The vendors offered an array of goods and services that you can't find anywhere else, everything from beads, to blankets, to bows and arrows, you could find at the pow wow vendors. Traditional herbal remedies and medicinals including Sage, Sweetgrass, and tobacco were well represented.

 Of special note, representative Jennifer McClellan of Virginia's 4th congressional district announced her sponsorship of a bill endorsing the Nottoway Indian tribe of Virginia for federal recognition. Also, it was noted that the oldest living Nottoway Elder, James C. Flowers, Sr.,  A World War II veteran and Tuskegee Airmen is the fourth oldest man in the United States at 109 years old.

Chief Lynette Allston expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating, "The annual Powwow is a time for us to come together to honor our ancestors, celebrate our living culture, and share our traditions with the wider community. We are excited to welcome everyone to our tribal grounds for a weekend of learning, celebration, and unity." 

Highlights of the Powwow included: 

  • Announcement of Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia, Inc. Federal Recognition Bill
  • Nottoway elder. WWII veteran and Tuskegee Airman James C. Flowers, Sr. is the 4th oldest man in the US at 109.
  • Grand Entry ceremonies, featuring dancers in full regalia 
  • Storytelling sessions that shared the rich history and legends of the Nottoway people 
  • Craft vendors offering handmade jewelry, pottery, textiles, and more
  • A variety of food vendors featuring native food favorites like Fried Fish, Bison Burgers, Indian Tacos and Frybread!

Master of Ceremonies: Rick Kelly, Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia, Inc. Councilman 

Head Man: Mike Harmon, Nanticoke Nation

Head Lady: Zianne Richardson, Haliwa-Saponi, Miss Native North Carolina, 2024/25

Arena Director: Michael Nephew, Eastern Band Cherokee

Drums: Yapatoko & Red Clay 

We had a memorable weekend celebrating the enduring spirit and culture of the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia, Inc. It  was two days filled with enriching experiences, cultural exchanges, and unforgettable moments at our PowWow.

The Nottoway Pow wow will return next year, September 19 & 20, 2026 in Surry, Virginia!
