The Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia, Inc. is excited to announce that on May 5, 2012, it will embark on another page in the history books as it formally opens the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia, Inc. Community House & Interpretive Center in Capron, VA.
The Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia, Inc has a rich history from documented first contact in the 17th Century until the present time. The Nottoway Community House & Interpretive Center is being operated and funded by Nottoway family citizens. The opening of the Community House will also be the first public viewing of the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia’s permanent exhibit. The Tribe hopes to enrich the Communities of Capron, Southampton County and beyond through it’s’ exhibit, “From Barter…To Buffer…To Be”, which will address key issues and pivotal points in Nottoway Indian history through time. “From Barter” will explain the earliest trade interactions of the Nottoway with distant Indian Tribes, and later with Virginia’s Colonial government. “To Buffer” will discuss the impact of the actions of the Nottoway on transitions in the expansion of Virginia’s non-Indian population south of the James and Blackwater Rivers. “To Be” will address the evolution of the Nottoway as citizens of Virginia. This permanent exhibit was made possible by donations from Nottoway families and friends that were matched equally by funds provided by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities (VFH).
Visitors to the Community House will come away with lasting impressions and knowledge about facts and depictions for each thematic period so as to facilitate interpretive discussion about Nottoway history and culture. The overarching goal of the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia, Inc. is to educate through programming and sharing local cultures and traditions. Educational programming at the Community House and grounds will include presentations by lecturers, storytellers, crafters, visual artists, and performing artists from within the Tribe as well as the communities surrounding the center, state, and the nation.
Bottom line, a visit to the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia, Inc.’s Community House & Interpretive Center is one you won’t want to miss. The Community House is located at 23186 Main Street. Capron, VA (Route 58 between Courtland and Emporia). The Opening will be held on Saturday, May 5 between 1-5pm on the grounds of the house. We will “kick off” the Community House’s existence with an opening program, tours of the house, native music, storytelling, crafts displays, demonstrations, and food.
